On 6 February, 2017, European commission published EC type approval protocol No. 51 for Microwavable toys.
Microwavable warmers in the form of plush animals and similar articles are to be classed as toys and are within the scope of Toy Safety Directive (TSD) 2009/48/EC. However, when a toy has one or more features that are not addressed by EN 71, an EC-type examination shall be done. The objective of this protocol is to provide specifications and test methods and intended to be used for the testing of the functional heating aspect of microwavable warmers when used in combination with toys.
The protocol applies to both of the following types of warmers:
- Warmers of which the grain, polymer granules, silicon gel or other filling material is contained within an inner casing which needs to be removed from the outer cover of the warmer and placed in the microwave oven.
- Warmers which are integrated and where the whole product is placed in the microwave oven.
The protocol also includes preparation of the test sample, requirement like Resistance to pressure, Resistance to overheating and warnings and instructions for use.
