Brazilian Administrative Rule No. 640 of 2012, published in the Official Journal on 7 December 2012, sets out new mandatory procedures for conformity assessment of wires, electric cables and flexible cords.
By 7 June 2014, wires, cables and cords must be manufactured and imported in accordance with the conformity assessment procedures laid down in the legislation and registered with INMETRO. From 7 December 2014, manufacturers and importers are prohibited from selling non-compliant products. This prohibition will extend to retailers and other parties by 7 December 2015.
The Rule also prohibits the manufacture, import and marketing of cables insulated with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) rated voltages up to 450/750V and cables and conductors insulated with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) rated voltages up to 450/750V.
