By opening a new testing laboratory for grow lights, TÜV SÜD is responding to a global trend. As the worlds population expands, cultivation of vegetables, fruit and flowers under exactly controlled conditions is becoming increasingly important. This applies in particular to China, the worlds most populous country. At its location in Shenzhen, near the border to Hong Kong, TÜV SÜD is now opening its Horticulture Lighting Laboratory, one of the first facilities of this type worldwide.

The next German Garden Exhibition (Bundesgartenschau, BUGA) will take place in Heilbronn in 2019. The preparations are well under way. Creating space for experiencing nature on the banks of the River Neckar, the landscape and garden architects are building a wooden walkway system at the waterside. The company commissioned to build the wooden structure, Holzbau Reichel GmbH, uses wood from responsible forestry and has this fact certified by TÜV SÜD Czech.

With better seats that are easier to use and have fewer sources of fault, car travel has become considerably safer for children in recent years. A supplement to a technical regulation will now provide further improvements for infants who have outgrown their infant carriers but are still too small to travel in forward-facing car seats. Experts from 22 countries discussed this issue at the “Protection of Children in Cars” conference with the subtitle “Past success and new tasks for the future”, held at TÜV SÜD. In this context, the experts also focused particularly closely on booster seats, which play an important role in the safe transport of older children.

Automated driving will fundamentally change road-vehicle approval methods, concluded the participants at the “Homologation” conference organised jointly by TÜV SÜD Auto Service and TÜV SÜD Academy. In December 2017, 140 experts from industry, regulatory bodies and research institutes spent two days discussing how technological progress will change road-vehicle homologation. Other topics addressed at the conference included international approval procedures in countries such as the Russian Federation and China, and the approval of agricultural vehicles.
